Hi! Thank you for visiting the site. This project is a conceptual city-wide sound installation. A documentation of sorts that makes special and noteworthy the sonic occurrences that normally get lost in the everyday urban soundscape. These sounds you will hear can’t be composed and can rarely be duplicated or captured (God knows, I tried!).
The idea for this project began forming in my head one day while I was dropping off an amp for repair in the SE industrial area by the train tracks. It was then I heard the swirling sound of many drums being played outdoors. I knew they were close by but since I was near where the freeways and Morrison bridge connect, it was hard to pinpoint the exact location. These drums were reverberating from every underpass I walked under, and the passing rush-hour traffic was creating a confusing wall of noise. I finally found the source of the cacophony on the corner of SE Water & Morrison. And just as I sat to listen to them, an Amtrak passenger train passed by, blowing it’s horn. It sounded amazing, and it made me immediately wonder where else in Portland these sonic occurrences take place…so I began asking some people I knew for their favorite sonic space.
You can sort the locations (sonic spaces) by PARTICIPANT if you would like to browse by contributor. Each location has a GET DIRECTIONS link at the bottom of the page that will send you to the exact coordinates of the spot using Google Maps. Around town you will find QR Codes (if they haven’t been taken down already) placed inside the drawing of an ear. That means where you are is special to someone. Scan it, see where it goes or better yet….listen.
Feel free to explore and listen online using the links above, but it sounds better outside.
